Every well managed project uses a project management methodology. Frequently used methods are Prince2, PMP, PMBOK or IPMA. There are also many corrupted versions, possibly supplemented with their own addition of personal check lists and templates.

Every well managed project uses a project management methodology. Frequently used methods are Prince2, PMP, PMBOK or IPMA. There are also many corrupted versions, possibly supplemented with their own addition of personal check lists and templates.

Why is a project methodology so important?

Imagine you, as an organisation, are confronted with a transition and you ask yourself: how can I successfully complete this transition? In addition to the fact we feel this transition must be managed by an experienced transition manager, you will soon be confronted with numerous methodologies as mentioned above, which – providing they are followed properly – all promise to complete projects successfully. Of course, in practice that isn’t always the case, but a project management methodology does give you a guideline to build on, a communal ‘language’ with other project managers and project team members and will provide you with an insight into instruments you could use. Project management methodologies are therefore the tools of the transition manager. If you open the transition manager’s toolbox, there will be elements of methodologies, personal talent, competencies and a pile of political sensitivity. Use that tool if necessary – not a single mechanic will get all of his tools out for every job and use everything for the smallest of repairs. The metaphor may appear far-fetched – unfortunately there are too many project managers and transition managers who became the greatest project risk in this way.

There are already so many methodologies, so why TERM©?

TERM© stands for Transition Experts Realisation Method and is based on Prince2 and expanded with specific steps and products for transition projects. Thanks to our years of experience, frequently occurring lists or steps in the process have been converted to check lists and templates and the process has been made more specific for transition projects.   The result is a more extensive toolbox with more specialised tools. This is comparable to a car mechanic’s toolbox. Like mechanics from other professions, this mechanic has, for instance, a hammer, screwdrivers, combination pliers and a chisel in his toolbox. However, a car mechanic will also have a torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts with exactly the right strength. That is something specific to this profession. This is also the case for transition projects. Specific tools are necessary here too. These tools have been included in TERM©.

Is TERM© the solution to all transition projects?

Of course, the answer to this is NO. In order to keep proper control of a transition project, you will need more than just a calibrated methodology. As mentioned previously in this paragraph, a specialised transition manager is essential. Of course, an appropriate methodology such as TERM© contributes to a successful project. But we also want to bring supported transition tooling to your attention. Tooling like this will ensure everyone has an overview of the project progress, the objects to be transferred or migrated and the ultimate migration planning according to the object and user level. This tooling was also developed by Transition Experts and is called InControl©.
